Depopulation or population decline? Demographic nightmares and imaginaries

چکیده
Scientists are well aware of the major social, economic and cultural challenges brought about by population decline. However, we can often underestimate more extreme interpretations both causes consequences decline in popular discourse. In this commentary, I explore some these toxic narratives, speculate how they may be linked to what appears a prevailing populist/ethno-nationalist view grounded political tropes, rather than scientific reality. Using Armitage’s (2021) concept “demographic imaginaries”, argue that much public discourse serves several vital purposes: try simplify complex issue; “unify”; blame scapegoat; and, ultimately, negate obligation make tough, policy decisions. also scientists working field need should active efforts ground science conclude bottom-up approach responding most fruitful avenue for progress future.

Investigating the relationship between the frequency and disturbance of nightmares with personality traits and demographic characteristics
Nightmares can cause general distress and sleep disturbances in the general population and negatively affect their subjective well-being. Knowing the predictors and etiology of recurring and distressing nightmares such as personality and demographic factors can help to understand and treat this disorder. The study population was undergraduate and graduate students of the Islamic Azad University...
متن کاملYellow-Bellied Marmot Population Dynamics: Demographic Mechanisms of Growth and Decline
Multiple environmental factors may act synergistically to influence demographic characteristics, and ultimately the dynamics, of biological populations. Using prospective and retrospective analyses of demographic data from a 40-year study of individually marked animals, we investigated the demographic mechanisms of the temporal and spatial dynamics of a yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventr...
متن کاملDemographic drivers of decline and recovery in an Afro-Palaearctic migratory bird population
Across Europe, rapid population declines are ongoing in many Afro-Palaearctic migratory bird species, but the development of appropriate conservation actions across such large migratory ranges is severely constrained by lack of understanding of the demographic drivers of these declines. By constructing regional integrated population models (IPMs) for one of the suite of migratory species that i...
متن کاملDemographic models and IPCC climate projections predict the decline of an emperor penguin population.
Studies have reported important effects of recent climate change on Antarctic species, but there has been to our knowledge no attempt to explicitly link those results to forecasted population responses to climate change. Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) is projected to shrink as concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs) increase, and emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are extreme...
متن کاملEstimation of population growth or decline in genetically monitored populations.
This article introduces a new general method for genealogical inference that samples independent genealogical histories using importance sampling (IS) and then samples other parameters with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). It is then possible to more easily utilize the advantages of importance sampling in a fully Bayesian framework. The method is applied to the problem of estimating recent chan...
